Americans Spend a Record $13.5 Billion on Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery continues to gain popularity, and this trend shows no signs of slowing down, according to the latest report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In fact, for the first time ever, Americans spent more than $13.5 billion on aesthetic procedures (a $1.5 billion increase from the previous year!). In this blog post, we reveal the most popular procedures and other interesting trends from ASAPS.

Top Surgical Procedures

Surgical procedures accounted for 58 percent of all cosmetic procedures performed in 2015, a 7 percent increase from 2014. Liposuction came out on top with 396,048 procedures performed. Rounding out the top five most popular surgical procedures were breast augmentation, tummy tuck surgery, eyelid surgery and breast lift.

Top Non-Surgical Procedures

Non-surgical procedures made up 42 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2015, a 22 percent increase from the previous year. Botox continued to be the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure, with 4,267,038 procedures in 2015. Hyaluronic acid fillers, including Juvederm, Lyft & Restylane,  and Voluma followed in second. Hair removal, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion rounded out the top five.

Procedures Seeing the Most Significant Increases

Non-surgical skin tightening saw the most significant increase in 2015, rising a whopping 58 percent from 2014. Tattoo removal went up 38 percent while microdermabrasion increased 34 percent in 2015. Beautiful behinds and chiseled chests were also in demand as buttock lifts and male breast reduction rose 32 percent and 26 percent respectively.

Fat Grafting Among the Top 10 Procedures

For the first time ever, fat grafting, which involves removing unwanted fat and using it to augment another body area, was among the top 10 most popular surgical procedures. According to ASAPS, there were 18,487 fat grafting procedures to the buttocks, 18,135 to the breasts and 48,059 to the face.

Most Popular Procedures by Age Group

These latest statistics also give us a look at which plastic surgery procedures are in demand among different age groups. The most common surgical procedure among patients 18 and under was ear surgery, while breast augmentation was the most popular for patients ages 19 to 35. Liposuction was the most popular among individuals age 35 to 64. Eyelid surgery was the most common procedure for patients 65 and over.
