Commonly Asked Questions about Lip Augmentation

Whether it’s to enhance naturally thin lips or restore volume to aged lips, lip augmentation can deliver results that are both natural and beautiful. If you’ve been thinking about having lip enhancement, you probably have some questions about the procedure. Here, the trusted surgeons at Burt & Will Plastic Surgery & Laser Centre answer the most commonly asked questions regarding lip augmentation.

How Are Lips Augmented?

Lip augmentation creates fuller lips using either cosmetic facial fillers, fat transfer, or lip implants. Hyaluronic acid fillers involve injecting a hyaluronic acid solution to fill the lip area. Collagen-based fillers are made of proteins derived from either human skin or animal skin. With fat transfer, excess fat and tissue from body areas such as the buttocks, stomach and thighs is removed and reinjected to fill in the lips.

At Burt & Will Plastic Surgery and Laser Centre, we offer our patients hyaluronic acid fillers including JuvedermRestylane and Lyft injections that offer beautiful, long-lasting results.

Who Is a Candidate for Lip Augmentation?

Ideal candidates for lip augmentation have naturally thin lips or lips that have lost volume due to aging. Additionally, suitable candidates are in good overall health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. While lip augmentation can give you fuller, luscious lips and raise your self-esteem, it may not make you feel happier about other aspects of your life.

Is the Procedure Painful?

The lips are one of the most delicate and sensitive parts on the body. Knowing this, our plastic surgeons do their best to reduce any pain or discomfort patients may feel during the procedure. Numbing cream is applied 30 minutes before the injections to block nerves to the lips. Because of this, patients feel very little sensation during the procedure.

Will My Lips Feel Different?

Following the procedure, your lips will look fuller and feel swollen for about a week.  Your lips may feel stiff for about two weeks, but will gradually soften to a point where they will look fuller and soft.

Will the Results Look Natural?

Many people who want fuller lips worry plastic surgery will make their lips look unnatural or over-filled. A qualified plastic surgeon who is skilled in lip enhancement can deliver results that are both beautiful and subtle. During your pre-op consultation, your plastic surgeon will discuss with you a treatment plan and amount of injection fillers that adequately match your facial proportions and enhance your appearance at the same time.

How Long Is Recovery?

Following your procedure, you may experience some minor swelling or bruising, which typically lasts up to two days. Patients should avoid exercise the next day to minimize swelling. Most patients can return to their regular routines two days following the procedure.

How Long Do Results Last?

The results of lip augmentation vary, depending on the fillers or treatment used. Hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm can achieve beautiful results that typically last up to a year before touchups and maintenance are recommended. Results from collagen-based fillers typically last for three to four months. Ultimately, the amount of filler you add will determine how long results will last. In many cases, fat transfer results last longer than those achieved with fillers.
