Trend Alert: More Men Having Cosmetic Treatments

In February of this year, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) released its annual plastic surgery procedural statistics, with one of the standout statistics being a marked increase of 43 percent in the amount of men getting cosmetic procedures over the last five years. There are many reasons that men choose to enhance their appearance through the use of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, as the team at Burt & Will Plastic Surgery and Laser Centre explains below.

Searching for the Fountain of Youth: Not Just for Women

We live in a youth-obsessed culture, and men aren’t immune to its influence. Men who are in their 30s, 40s and older are working out and staying in shape more and more these days, but sometimes that’s not enough to quell the effect of aging on the face and body. Even men who are proud to show off their hard work in the gym may feel that the wrinkles on their face don’t match their upkept physique. For this reason, over the last five years there has been a 44 percent increase in facelifts and an 84 percent increase in BOTOX treatments for male clientele.

Cosmetic Surgery: A Good Business Move?

The growing the number of male cosmetic surgery procedures is not due solely to men wanting to look more attractive for themselves and for women. An increasing number of men are using cosmetic enhancements in order to get ahead of the game in a competitive job market. They reason that if they look younger and fitter, they will be considered worthy contenders alongside and even above their younger counterparts. And in the current corporate environment, where people are working longer and later in life, some men feel a very real need to eradicate signs of aging from their face and body in order to keep up with the longevity of their careers. But cosmetic procedures aren’t just for men in their 40s and older. Even men in their late 20s and 30s who are starting to see some changes in their skin elasticity opt for nonsurgical face procedures that create subtle but noticeable results.

Most Popular Treatments for Men

According to the ASAPS statistics, the most popular surgical and nonsurgical procedures for men are:

  • Eyelid lift (blepharoplasty)
  • Facelift
  • BOTOX
  • Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
  • Male breast reduction (gynecomastia)
